As our menus change, so must our wines.
With Autumn settling in after our long summer, we now say goodbye to the pale pinks and the summer time Sauvignons, and welcome back those crisp fruity whites and the full bodied reds. Autumn brings the perfect opportunity to drink those wines that go hand in hand with the warm comforting foods we all enjoy and ones that make you think of changing leaves and cool, clear nights.
This week’s wine of the week is the Meerlust Chardonnay 2010.
A suburb South African Chardonnay, produced in the region of Stellenbosch. A country that is known for building the bridge between old and new wines, has produced this balanced white, with forward mineral tones and an upfront oak spice. Take this to a dinner party and let the conversation begin.
On the eye, a bright polished green with an appealing nose of quince, citrus and floral notes, developing into richness of lemon cream, oatmeal and marzipan, dropping subtle hints that the Christmas season is on its way.
A full bodied, generous wine, its crisp acidity and ripe fruits on the palate are well balanced by a pure minerality, ending with a very pleasant lingering finish.
With hints of green apples and creamy oak, this Chardonnay makes a great transition wine from the Autumn months through to the Winter season.
This Chardonnay, produced by one of South Africa’s grandees and winemaker, Chris Williams, is complemented and exceptionally paired with ripe soft cheeses or a succulent grilled lobster.
A sweet Butternut Squash Risotto or a honey Roasted Chicken dish would be a fine match for the contrast of the acidic sharpness and oak spice combined with the buttery creaminess and sweet fruitiness that bursts from this exceptional Chardonnay.
